The value chain

From dirt to the things that stop working without it. Seven steps, and the material is worth roughly a thousand times more at the end than the beginning.

These seventeen elements and the minerals beside them are the lifeblood of almost everything built since 1980. Not a niche input. The thing underneath the thing.

Your phone, the fiber that carries this page to it, the MRI machine that finds a tumor, the coating that lets a jet engine run hotter than the melting point of its own blades, the chip in everything, the drug that treats prostate cancer, the primer in a rifle cartridge, the magnet in a wind turbine. All of it.

Most coverage treats this as a magnet story because magnets are where the geopolitics is loudest. Magnets are maybe a third of it.

The shape of the problem, in one sentence

Value multiplies at the steps China owns, and barely moves at the step the West keeps investing in.

Digging ore is the cheapest, least differentiated, most environmentally contested part of this chain, and it is where nearly every Western announcement lands. Separation, metallization and component manufacture, where a kilogram goes from worth tens of dollars to worth hundreds or thousands, are three consecutive steps where China holds 90% or more.

A country that mines and ships concentrate has not built a supply chain. It has built a quarry that feeds someone else's.

Fourteen things that stop working

Not eventually. Not at the margin. These have no qualified substitute at the performance and price they are designed around.

Why "no substitute" is a stronger claim than it sounds

In most of these the alternative isn't a worse product. It's no product. There is no thermal barrier coating that isn't yttria-stabilized zirconia at the temperatures modern turbines run. There is no fiber amplifier without erbium. There is no PET scan without a lutetium scintillator, and no contrast-enhanced MRI without gadolinium.

Where substitution does exist, iron-nitride magnets, switched reluctance motors, magnet-free traction designs, it is unproven at scale and cost. It's the honest falsifier for this entire thesis, and it deserves to be stated on the same page as the argument rather than buried. Every restriction episode funds it further. If it works, the scarcity story ends.

Where I'm looking

Every step above needs businesses around it that never appear on a chart. Assay labs. Precision machining. Calibration. Materials handling. Furnace and kiln service. Equipment repair. Industrial cleaning. Permitting.

Those firms are fragmented, owner-operated, and largely uncovered. They are also the only part of this chain a person can actually buy into without a sovereign wealth fund. That's the layer I'm mapping, and the one I'm looking to own.

On the value figures. Order-of-magnitude only, drawn from a mix of published prices, product listings and reported deal terms across different elements and years. Real values vary enormously by element. A kilogram of separated lutetium and a kilogram of separated cerium are not remotely comparable. The curve is the point; the numbers are illustrative and should not be quoted.

Where this is thin. The step-by-step China share figures vary by source depending on what's being counted. I've used the conservative end of published ranges.
